Mr. David Floodeen comes to The Academy with a broad background at many levels of education and administration. He is a retired Naval Officer and former Navy pilot. In his 20 years of Naval Service, he has taught numerous programs and workshops. His last assignment was at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) where he served as the Deputy Dean of Students and the Director of Student Affairs. Following retirement from Naval service, Mr. Floodeen joined the faculty at NPS as an Asst. Professor of Computer Science. There he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. He was also the Associate Chair of the Computer Science Department and served as the Executive Director of the Software Engineering Automation Center, a research institute at NPS. It was in this last capacity that he developed the Naval Postgraduate School’s first fully accredited online degree program.
In 2005, Mr. Floodeen relocated his family to Colorado where he started his “second career” in public education. Mr. Floodeen was the Math Department Chair at Fort Lupton High School and taught courses at all levels of Math and Science. He is a certified AP Calculus teacher and was honorarium faculty with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as part of their CU Succeed program. As a member of that program, he taught dual credit courses that earned both high school credit and college credit for students. Mr. Floodeen then left the public school to join the faculty at Carbon Valley Academy (CVA), a small charter school in Frederick, CO. While at CVA, Mr. Floodeen developed the Math and Science programs for their newly formed secondary academy (grades 6-12). In March of 2011, Mr. Floodeen left to open the STEM School and Academy in Highlands Ranch. As the Principal, he developed and installed a rigorous STEM program that included both academics and afterschool extended learning opportunities. Then, when the opportunity became available, he joined The Academy team as the Interim Executive Director.
Mr. Floodeen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and did PhD research work in Software Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
